Following last weeks feature on the top 5 A/V receivers under $600 I've compiled a list of the 5 best Blu-Ray discs to test out your new sound system on. Now while testing a sound system you need reference audio that can accurately test the entire sound spectrum. From the highest of highs to the lowest of lows. These 5 blu rays will dazzle you with spectacular effects in a few or all areas that will make your ears orgasm.
5. 9
If you ever had a chance to vibrate a woman's panties off while watching a movie, you'd do it with 9. This DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track provided by Universal could be the most bass heavy blu-ray ever made. With strong enveloping surround, rear speakers will resonate with eery sounds that will definitely immerse you in the movie. LFE output is constant, tight, and deep. If you just spend a few hundred on that brand new sub woofer and wanna see what it can do, put this in.
4. The Matrix
The Matrix sports a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 surround track worthy of any home theater out there. If you are like me and owned the original DVD of The Matrix, you remember the reference quality sound that we got from that archaic Dolby Digital 5.1 package. Well this time around it's even better. In 1999 The Matrix won Academy Awards for best sound and best sound effect editing and this blu-ray will show you why. Low bass and crystal clear mids and highs create a level of definition and clarity unrivaled by any other movie. Hear as bullets wiz by you in bullet time or as the destruction of the building lobby scene happens all around you. You'll get all kinds of unique and mechanical sounds from this movie you won't get anywhere else. A lot of folks reach for this disc first when testing out new speakers and it's easy to hear why.
3. Cloverfield
Paramount delivers a pure nasty Dolby TrueHD 5.1 surround sound track that will shake the very depths of your soul. I've gotta say that I absolutely loved this movie and one of the main reasons was because the fantastic sound kept me immersed in the movie from beginning to end. This is a unique track in where the voices have been processed to make they sound like they were recorded on a camcorder. All this adds to the realism this audio track delivers. Constant ambiance from my rear speakers is something I love and Cloverfield has plenty of it. Rumbling LFE sound envelops your movie room at just the right scenes in the movie that will send chills down your spine. Truly an all world reference quality blu ray.
Loud. That's the one word I would use to describe the uncompressed PCM 5.1 audio track of Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down. Not exactly a fantastic movie in it's own right, and this coming from a huge Ridley Scott fan, the movie certainly does deliver on reference quality audio though. The soundfield created by the constantly engaging surround will place you right in the middle of the battle on the streets of Mogadishu. A constant barrage of gunfire and just total all out war will stun you no doubt. This movie will put your system to the test for sure.
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen's DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 audio track is quite simply the best that I've ever heard. From the first transformation of the logo to start the film, you know that you are in for a treat. Giant robots battling each other, gunfire from human and alien weapon alike, explosions galore, and the all unique sound of transforming robots. All delivered in a dynamic soundfield like no other. What else could you want? Deep bass in every footstep of these metal giants, crackling and swooshing of gunfire as it whizzes by your head, the metal on metal grinding as Optimus takes on several decepticons by himself. You will hear everything from a full soundfield that will put your home theater right in the middle of the battle. In addition to fantastic audio the movie also delivers fantastic video. If you got the Walmart exclusive edition you will be treated to super high resolution IMAX shots in certain parts of the movie which in their own right are reference quality for your display. All audiophiles and videophiles alike should own this movie. If you don't, go out and buy it right now. And if ever you get a chance to blow women's clothing off with your brand new speakers, reach for this movie.
